Sport Calgary Announces Annual Award Winners


Sport Calgary has announced the winners of its Ron Southern Business and Sport Award, as well as its Sport Leadership Award.

“On behalf of Sport Calgary, I extend my congratulations to this year’s winners,” said Murray Sigler, Sport Calgary CEO. “Sport is important because it brings us closer together and unites us, not divides us. Calgary’s rich history of sport is supported and strengthened through the contributions of organizations like Shaw Communications, Corus Entertainment, and Respect Group.”

Shaw Communications and Corus Entertainment are the winners of the Ron Southern Business and Sport Award. The award recognizes and celebrates a business that provides outstanding and innovative support to sport in Calgary.

Shaw Communications and Corus Entertainment are both dedicated to supporting the growth of a strong, healthy community by being active contributors to the development of athletics in Calgary and across the country. Through events like the Shaw Charity Classic and work with charitable partners like KidSport, Shaw Communications helps ensure that athletes and fans have the best opportunity to participate in sports. Likewise, Corus Entertainment has collaborated with hundreds of charities and sporting organizations to tell their stories and create awareness and opportunity for athletes.

Past winners include: ARC Resources (2006); Cardel Homes (2007); Encana (2008); Tim Hortons (2009); Intact Insurance ING (2010); TimberTown Building Centre Ltd. (2011); Tuxedo Source for Sport (2012); Shane Homes (2013); Talisman Energy Inc. (2014); and Canadian Tire Corporation (Forzani Group Limited) (2016).

Respect Group is the winner of the Sport Leadership Award. The award recognizes and celebrates the outstanding contribution of a sport club or organization, which has made a significant positive contribution to the betterment of sport in Calgary.

Founded in 2004, Sheldon Kennedy and Wayne McNeil created an organization to pursue their common passion: the prevention of abuse, bullying and harassment. 

Respect Group empowers people to recognize and prevent bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination (BAHD) through interactive, online certification. Its vision is to eliminate bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination by inspiring a global culture of respect. Through its work with partners like Hockey Calgary, Respect Group is changing the culture of sport for the better. 

Past winners include: Calgary Booster Club (2005); Canadian Sport Centre Calgary (2006); KidSport Society of Calgary (2007); Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (2008); Girls Hockey Calgary (2009); Greater Calgary and Area Football Association (2010); Special Olympics Calgary (2011); WinSport Canada (2012); Calgary Track Council (2013); Dino Women’s Volleyball Club (2014); and YMCA (2016).
