Type: Casual / event-based, approx. 15–30 appearances per year

About Sport Calgary
Sport Calgary is a nonprofit that supports 350+ sport clubs and associations across the city. We exist so every kid can find their sport — and through it, a place they belong. Our work removes the barriers that keep kids out: cost, access, and awareness.
Rookie is our mascot, and for a lot of Calgary kids, Rookie is the first and only piece of Sport Calgary they’ll ever meet in person. We’re hiring two casual roles to bring Rookie to community events, school visits, club nights and festivals across the 2026–27 season.
Mascot Performer — $20.00/hour
You perform as Rookie: no speaking, limited vision, 20-minute sets, and a room full of kids who will remember it forever.
Perform at community events, school visits, club nights, festivals and Sport Calgary flagship events
Lead the energy — high fives, dance-offs, photo poses, mini games
Read the room: big for a crowd, small and gentle for a nervous child
Stay in character at all times. Rookie never speaks and never removes the head in public
Care for and transport the costume
Backgrounds that translate well: dance, theatre, cheer, sport, coaching, cosplay, camp leadership.
Mascot Attendant — $17.50/hour
You are Rookie’s eyes, voice and exit — and the adult accountable for every interaction being safe and visible.
Stay within arm’s reach of Rookie at all times in public
Speak on Rookie’s behalf — greet families, run the photo line, share what Sport Calgary does
Manage crowds and physical space, and guide the performer around hazards
Monitor for heat and fatigue, and call breaks. This decision is yours, not the performer’s
Capture photo and video at every appearance
First aid certification an asset
Backgrounds that translate well: youth sport, camps, education, events, front-of-house or customer-facing work.
Requirements (both roles)
18 years or older
Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search — required before your first appearance. Sport Calgary covers the cost
Availability on weekends and weekday evenings, with the heaviest season running May through September
Reliable transportation to venues across Calgary. Parking and mileage reimbursed
Performer: comfortable carrying approximately 20 lbs of costume, and working in a hot environment. Approximate height range 5’6″–6’0″ for suit fit
Conditions
Paid from call time to release — the 45-minute setup, all mandated breaks, and pack-down are paid time. Rookie and the Attendant are always booked as a pair.
How to apply
No resume required. Send a short note telling us which role you want and why, plus a 60-second video of you moving — dance, play, be ridiculous. That’s the audition. Attendant applicants: instead of the video, tell us about a time you had to manage a crowd or say no to someone politely.
Apply to marketing@sportcalgary.ca by November 1, 2026.
Sport Calgary welcomes applicants of all backgrounds, abilities and experience levels. If you need an accommodation at any stage of the process, tell us and we’ll work it out.
