State of Sport Report in Calgary

Current trends in Calgary sport, 2026 Council priorities, and why this discussion matters.

Craig Conroy

Craig Conroy is the General Manager of the Calgary Flames, appointed after serving nine years as the club’s Assistant General Manager. A former NHL forward, Conroy played 1,009 regular season games and 81 playoff games over his career, including the Flames’ memorable run to the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals. He also represented the United States at the 2004 World Cup and 2006 Olympics, and was a two-time Selke Trophy finalist.
Originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1990, Conroy graduated from Clarkson University with a Business degree before turning pro in 1994. He came to Calgary via a trade with St. Louis in 2001, serving as team captain before passing the “C” to Jarome Iginla. He retired as a Flame in February 2011 after 11 years in the league.
Following his playing career, Conroy transitioned immediately into the front office as a special assistant to the GM and assistant coach, before being named Assistant GM in 2014 — a role he held for nine years before his promotion. Off the ice, he is deeply involved in the Calgary community through organizations including the Calgary Flames Foundation, the PREP Program. He and his wife Jessie have three daughters and have called Calgary home since 2001.

Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming is the Director of Recreation & Social Programs for The City of Calgary. He previously served as Director of Facilities from 2021 and has been with The City since 2015. During his tenure with Facilities, Ian held several senior leadership roles, including leading Data & Technology and Tangible Capital Assets, followed by Manager of Strategic Business Services.

Prior to joining The City, Ian held several private-sector roles, including Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Business Development at Gold Royalties Corp., Business Analytics Lead at Eli Lilly Canada, and Market Analyst at The Nielsen Company. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Western University’s Ivey School of Business and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Brock University.

Adam Kingsmill

As a two-time Paralympic medalist and a Certified Athletic Therapist, Adam Kingsmill offers a powerful dual perspective on the intersection of elite performance and physical accessibility. His journey from grassroots sports in Alberta to the global stage provides a unique lens into the evolving state of para-sport and the systemic shifts needed to foster inclusion. Adam’s professional background and lived experience make him an invaluable voice for discussing how we can dismantle barriers and build a more accessible future for all athletes.
