Sport Calgary’s All Sport One Community partnered with the City of Calgary to host a free, multi-sport day to give teens in after-school programs the exposure to a variety of sports. This fully interactive day took place at the Optimist Athletic Park, where teens got to try field hockey, Muay Thai, and skateboarding in a supportive and welcoming space. Three national team athletes were present at this event allowing participants the opportunity to meet high-performing athletes that they can look up to.
The three national half-pipe athletes: Felicity Geremia and Ryan Vo (Canadian national team) and Augustinho Teixeira (Brazilian national team) dedicated their time and efforts to encourage and help instruct participants on the mechanics of skateboarding and encourage the kids on their own half-piping careers.
The event allowed each participant to try out and engage with three brand new sports through 45-minute sessions. Coaches from the Astros Field Hockey Club (AFHC) led the field hockey sessions. AFHC introduced the participants to field hockey in a fun way with prizes on offer, ensuring every kid had the opportunity to participate and shine.
WTM Muay Thai & Kickboxing led the Muay Thai sessions, allowing the kids to engage in a cultural and unique sport to ensure every kid had a fun and comfortable experience.
Riders on Board Snowboarding coaches worked with our Sport Ambassadors to offer a dynamic and thrilling space for kids to learn how to skateboard.
All three sports came together at the end of the day in an exciting relay event that highlighted the kids’ newly developed skills and enthusiasm for sport in a high-energy environment. Teens cheered on their teammates and encouraged one another throughout the relay as teams competed for medals. At the conclusion of the event, every participant was celebrated by stepping onto the podium to receive medals and awards recognizing their newly learned skills and active participation. This created a supportive, inclusive, and encouraging atmosphere where every child felt valued and proud of their achievements.
The event concluded with a Sport Ambassador Q&A where kids had the opportunity to ask the athletes a range of questions, from how they got into sport, to their favorite sports and foods, or their least favorite subjects in school!
Through this partnership with the City of Calgary, All Sport One Community continues to help break down barriers and promote inclusive and joyful experiences so that teens can have the chance to discover the joy of sports!
