CONTEXT

The City of Calgary and Sport Calgary conducted a research project in (2024-2025) to understand the impact of racism in sport. This included:

  •  A city-wide survey of Calgarians conducted by The City of Calgary research team

  • A qualitative focus group study conducted by Habitus Collective and ActionDignity. This study included Indigenous, Black and diverse Racialized youth and parents/guardians as well as coaches and referees.

Some of the key findings strengthened The City’s and Sport Calgary’s understanding that Indigenous, Black and diverse Racialized youth experience direct and explicit interpersonal, institutional and systemic racism. This presents a barrier in participating in sports and recreation and more crucially creates a sense of loss of belonging, dignity, safety and inclusion.

To learn more, we invite you to read the final report here: https://www.calgary.ca/parks-rec-programs/sport-for-life/anti-racism-in-sport.html

To address these barriers The City of Calgary and Sport Calgary committed to build an action plan that will help direct their work and showcase their commitment to anti-racist efforts in the city.

But this work cannot be done alone.  The City of Calgary and Sport Calgary recognize that everyone has a part to play. To support this action-planning process they started a two-part engagement.

We first hosted a workshop focused on a bringing together a small group of key actors to review and collaboratively identify key actions. The second engagement-designed as an open house- will allow for a wide range of actors from the sports eco-system to offer input on a roadmap for actions to address racism in sport.

We look forward to learning and working with you on this important next step of this project!

Thank you,
