Girls in Motorsport Day
On August 13, Sport Calgary partnered with Women in Motorsport Canada and the University of Calgary to host a motorsport and STEM day for girls ages 12-18.
Participants built their own mousetrap cars, tested their driving on simulators, explored solar car technology, toured the University of Calgary Racing workshops, and capped it all off with pro-karting at Speeders Calgary Airport. They also had a Q&A with Canadian professional race car driver Erika Hoffmann, along with women engineers and leaders who shared their experiences in the sport.
Encouraging girls to engage in STEM and motorsport is about more than one day of fun - it’s about representation, confidence, and possibility. Motorsport combines engineering, physics, teamwork, and innovation, and seeing women thriving in these spaces helps break down barriers and opens new pathways for the next generation.
Many participants left inspired to continue exploring motorsport. This event sparked curiosity and confidence that we hope will translate into long-term involvement in racing, engineering, and related fields.
Thank you to Women in Motorsport Canada, the University of Calgary, and all the volunteers, engineers, athletes, and leaders who made this day possible. Events like this demonstrate the power of community partnerships in creating opportunities and ensuring girls see themselves in every corner of STEM and sport.
