Sport Calgary Announces New Executive Director & CEO to Lead the Development of Sport in our City
CALGARY, Alberta — Today Sport Calgary is pleased to announce the appointment of Murray Sigler as Executive Director & CEO, with a mandate to help grow amateur and community sport in Calgary in all its forms.
“Sport is one of the most powerful forces in human culture. It has the ability to bring us together, to develop our minds and bodies, and to help us solve problems,” says Murray Sigler, “Whether welcoming new Canadians into our community, or setting an at-risk child on the right track, or driving economic activity, or just helping an aging body stay in shape – on all these fronts, sport can assist immensely.”
Sport Calgary is a volunteer non-profit society, that is the voice of amateur sport in the city of Calgary. As an advocate of sport, the organization strives to assist, support and influence the growth of sport in Calgary in all ways.
Sport Calgary is known for its popular program: All Sport One Day – a free day of sport discovery for all Calgary children that allows them to experience a variety of sports quickly at over a dozen facilities.This past year it set a new record, allowing over 3,000 Calgary Children to explore a new sport.

There are over 400 different sport organizations in Calgary, with nearly 400,000 active participants. From bowling and baton twirling, to ultimate and underwater hockey there is a sport (or two) for you, and everyone is encouraged to get involved.

Murray Sigler
Mr. Sigler is the newly appointed Executive Director & CEO of Sport Calgary.
Previously, Murray served Axia Net Media Corporation (TSX “AXX”) as President Axia North America and Axia SuperNet Ltd, also as Axia’s corporate Executive Vice President. In North America, Axia provides services over next generation fibre optic communications infrastructure in Alberta and Massachusetts.
Before joining Axia in 2009, Murray was Managing Director of the Government of Alberta's UK Office for 31⁄2 years. Prior to that, he was President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, and had an extensive career in the aviation industry, including having led Canadian Airlines Corporation as President and COO of Canadian Airlines International and CEO of Canadian Regional Airlines.
He holds degrees in Arts and Law from the University of Alberta. He is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and also a graduate of Harvard University's Graduate School of Business in the Advanced Management Program. In the past, he has served on various Corporate Boards of Directors in the aviation, tourism and energy sectors.
Mr. Sigler currently sits on the Calgary Economic Development Board of Directors, as well as the Calgary Airport Authority Board, and has been active throughout his career as a Board member and Chair of numerous other community and professional organizations in Alberta and nationally.
Mr. Sigler enjoys skiing, hiking, golfing and cycling. A lifelong Calgarian, he is an avid fan and supporter of various Calgary sports teams and activities.
