Sport Calgary Commends City Council for Continuing with 2026 Olympic Bid Exploration

CALGARY, Alberta — Sport Calgary today commended City Council for voting to continue the exploration process for a potential 2026 Olympic Bid.

“With the decision today, the potential benefits and risks can be objectively and practically identified in the context of a bid," said Murray Sigler, Sport Calgary CEO. "We need to see what Calgarians think of the Olympics through extensive public engagement, within the timeframes available for the new Committee of Council to carry on its work and report back to all stakeholders.

Sport Calgary is confident the exploration process could lead to a winning bid, broadly supported by an informed and engaged public. However, the social and economic benefits - and legacies - must be clearly identified and demonstrated to outweigh the risks.

“Today’s decision ensures Calgarians will have the opportunity to receive all the facts before making a critically important decision for our city,” said Sigler.
