Sport Calgary Supports New Event Centre
July 26, 2019
CALGARY, Alberta — Sport Calgary has voiced its strong support for the construction of a new public sports and entertainment event centre, as jointly announced on July 22, 2019 by the City of Calgary, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) and Calgary Stampede.
The deal as announced would provide $75 million of support to amateur sport from CSEC, in addition to all they and their ownership group already do in our community through the Calgary Flames Foundation.
CSEC was recognized by Sport Calgary as the 2018 winners of the Ron Southern Business and Sport Award, recognizing their tireless support of health and wellness, amateur and grassroots sports, and education initiatives. Since 2000, over $36 million has been invested back into southern Alberta communities by the Calgary Flames Foundation.
Above all, a new public sports and entertainment event centre would deliver public benefit for public dollars, and accelerate the redevelopment of East Victoria Park, in alignment with the Rivers District Master Plan.
“After 14 months of review, analysis and consultation by the City’s Event Centre Assessment Committee, Sport Calgary encourages Council to vote in favour of this project, and all the substantial benefits it will deliver to local sport,” said Murray Sigler, Sport Calgary CEO.
