Message from the City of Calgary - GamePlan

We (the GamePLAN team) are so grateful for your time and attention to this critically important work. It will shape the future of our collective efforts and it will have significant impacts for people living in Calgary. We’d like to thank you for your support and, most importantly, for the work you do every day to help make Calgary one of the most livable cities in the world!

Your contributions over the past two years have helped shape GamePLAN’s strategic direction, both in terms of how we invest in facilities and how we deliver services. As follow up to our most recent engagements in the fall, we’d like to share an overview of what is being presented to the Community Development Committee on Feb. 6, 2025.

Attached is “GamePLAN at Glance” that:

  • summarizes what GamePLAN intends to do and why it’s so important,

  • reiterates the vision and principles that will set the tone for the next 25 years of public recreation service in Calgary and

  • identifies tangible service impacts related to each of three service level scenarios going forward to Committee (Feb. 6) and Council (Feb. 25).

We are recommending that Council establish Making Waves as the service standard for public recreation facilities and amenities in Calgary. We are also asking Council to adopt the vision and principles in GamePLAN to help guide service decisions, inform policy, strengthen partnerships and introduce innovation!  Council’s decision will inform the development of an Implementation Plan and Capital Project Prioritization List to be presented at future budget cycles, beginning in 2026.

The information we are sharing today will be available publicly on The City’s engage portal next Thursday (Jan. 30, 2025) at Calgary.ca/GamePLAN.

Help us tell the story of public recreation!

Public recreation is more than pools, arenas and sport fields. Public recreation is:

  • Parents being able to enroll their kids in soccer or swim lessons.

  • Kids learning the value of teamwork and sportsmanship.

  • Seniors staying physically active and socially engaged.

  • At-risk youth having access to safe, engaging and creative spaces.

  • Newcomers finding connection in community.

  • Everyone having access to opportunities, regardless of income or geography.

If you would like to have your voice heard at the CDC meeting on Feb. 6, 2025, please fill out the Public Submission to City Clerk's Office.

Thank you, as always, for your work in service to Calgarians.

Sincerely,

The GamePLAN Team
