University of Calgary: Wood Forum 2021 - Sports Injury Prevention

The McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health (University of Calgary) brings you a free online public forum on Saturday, November 6th, on the latest research advances in sports injury prevention.

Topics include injury prevention in youth sport, managing injury risks when returning to pre-pandemic activities, rehabilitation strategies for knee injuries, and using walking aids safely.

The event will also include a presentation by wrestler and two-time Olympian Danielle Lappage, who will share her journey in sport.

Targets for the prevention of injuries and their consequences in youth sport

Presenter: Dr. Carolyn Emery

Carolyn will share evidence-informed examples of successful prevention strategies in youth sport and recreation that reduce injury rates, including joint injuries. Further, she will share research findings informing targets for the prevention of consequences of joint injuries in youth, including post-traumatic osteoarthritis.

From Pandemic to Epidemic: Sport Injuries are going to increase!

Getting Back to Health and Performance after Knee Injuries: Why Muscle Strength Matters

Knee injuries like a ligament rupture are painful and often require months and months of rehabilitation. Despite our best efforts, a little more than half of athletes will return to their pre-injury sport performance level. In this presentation, I will try to convince you that getting your leg muscles strong and symmetrical are keys to success.

A review of the science behind injuries caused by crutches, canes, and walkers, and how a new app called Improving Canadians' Walking Aids Skills, Learning and Knowledge (ICanWALK©) can help you use your walking aid safely.

Danielle Lappage presents: A Journey in Sport

A special presentation by Danielle Lappage, wrestler and two-time Olympian.

Danielle will discuss her journey in sport, how she overcame injuries and what she has gained through her experiences in competitive wrestling.

A pioneer in Canadian broadcasting, Lisa Bowes is an award-winning sports journalist and media consultant based in Calgary, Alberta  A Physical Education graduate from Western University, she is a passionate advocate for youth physical activity and reading literacy. Following the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, where she covered women’s hockey, Lisa began work on the best selling “Lucy Tries Sports” book series which encourages children to be active and persevere.
