Sport Calgary’s Annual General Meeting/Panel Discussion to Focus on Laying the Foundation for a Healthier Future Through Sport

—2024 Annual General Meeting, Report to Community, set for April 24 at 11 a.m.—

CALGARY—After delivering a progress report to Calgary’s sport community, three-time Olympic medallist and the president and chief executive officer of Sport Calgary will host a panel discussion with three community leaders with a focus on lay the foundation for a healthier future through sport.

Leonka Kaluha (Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024 Athlete Ambassador), Chris Cederstrand (Director at Cederstrand Foundation), Hamza Tariq (Future Stars Cricket Foundation, Founder & President) will address Calgary’s sport community at Sport Calgary’s Annual General Meeting and Celebration, April 24 at 11 a.m. at Vecova.

Kaluha embodies the spirit of perseverance and resilience as a longstanding Special Olympics athlete who was part of the leadership group who staged the most successful Games ever earlier this year in Calgary. Kaluha’s story transcends mere athletic accomplishments. Through her involvement in Special Olympics, she has come to redefine the concept of disability, recognizing her unique abilities and embracing her identity with pride despite facing initial barriers ad being unjustly dismissed from mainstream school sports.

An advocate for inclusion in sports while helping others overcome challenges in life, Cederstand has risen above adversity. A high-level hockey player drafted into the Red Deer Rebels organization of the WHL prior he has become an inspiration for overcoming adversity to persevere and accomplish new dreams and old.

A high-profiled name in the cricket community, Tariq is a beacon of talent, dedication and community spirit. He embarked on his cricketing journey in Calgary at age 15 and has since carved out a successful path on and off the field of play, earning him a spot on Canada’s National Team in 2010. He is now focused on improving the lives of others through the sport.
