Calgarians to Celebrate 2022 Beijing Games with Sport Festival at Olympic Plaza
—Winter Sport Festival and All Sport One City to feature sport, activity, music and fun while embracing winter—
CALGARY—Sport Calgary is looking to reconnect with Calgarians and Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic Teams at Olympic Plaza while celebrating the opening weekend of the 2022 Beijing Games and Chinook Blast with a FREE Sport Festival, February 5-6, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The official sport curator for Chinook Blast – the City’s annual celebration designed to embrace winter – Sport Calgary will celebrate the power of the Olympic and Paralympic movement in Calgary with a weekend of activity on the ice at Olympic Plaza while partnering with local clubs and sport groups.
Calgarians will have the opportunity to view figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating demonstrations before trying the sports themselves. The event will be topped off each day with a nod to the City’s Olympic roots by joining together in an 80’s themed Family Skate party. Equipment rentals are FREE!
Catch Olympic Games action on the big screen, musical performances, food, fun activity and so much more.
As part of Sport Calgary’s work to encourage participation in sport and recreation in the city, and help remove the barriers to participation, Sport Calgary is working alongside sport organizations from across the city to connect Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic heroes from the city with the citizens of Calgary. Although at the pinnacle of their sport now, all of the athletes who will represent Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games this year got their start on community rinks, playgrounds, toboggan hills, and recreation facilities. Their passion for sport evolved into chasing a lifelong dream they are now about to realize. In addition to being given the opportunity to get outdoors, Calgarians will also be able to send messages of support to Olympians and Paralympians from the Stampede City through a digital campaign #CheerOnCalgary
All Sport One City is also running this year from February 18–27. Calgary families will have an opportunity to try various sports for FREE at designated venues throughout the city. The new component this year is the addition of family sessions where children as young as 6 can take part, extending the reach of the program. It is an important opportunity to introduce Calgarians to new ways they can take part in sport as part of their healthy, active lifestyle. More than 70 sessions are currently planned from bobsleigh to lacrosse, to karate to learn to skate, ski jumping, rugby, skiing, skeleton and so much more. Registration is open February 11 at https://sportcalgary.ca/all-sport-one-city
