The last Futsal National Championship was held in Kingston, Ontario in 2019. Villains Elite FC represented Alberta in the 8-team tourney and finished top four in the standings. The Canada Futsal’s premier tournament was forced to take a pause in 2020 & 2021 due to the pandemic.

“It feels like yesterday when Internazionale and Progressive FC played in the epic final at Ambrose University just a week before the lockdown started," said Brian Wong, Executive Director of Futsal Calgary. “We are going to see another great game this time!”

Unfortunately, Internazionale never got the chance to compete in 2020. Neither did any team in 2021 because the entire season was also canceled due to health & safety restrictions. “This big opportunity doesn't come often so you want to take advantage of it,” commented Michael Lau, the captain who also participated in the 2019 event in Kingston, “Our team is capable of competing at the nationals.”

First thing first, Villains Elite FC needs to get past league rivals Callies FC, of which captain Mike Zepeda said his team is on the mission: “Callies FC have a prestigious past and have won numerous National titles but have never represented Alberta for Futsal Nationals. We want to make that dream happen this year.”

At Futsal Calgary, our mission is to promote the game of futsal to the community. Started in 2007, the original league has grown into a well-established program with the support and leadership from Calgary United Soccer Association.

“It is also a show-and-tell business. We have live-streamed dozens of games to increase the visibility of futsal which is an amazing game to begin with,” added Michelle Holmes, Marketing Coordinator at Futsal Calgary.

Two years after the last Final was played, Calgary soccer community will embrace another futsal version of March Madness.
